[RELIGIOSA] 17th century Hebrew Bible Menasseh BEN ISRAEL - Biblia Hebraica eleganti charactere impressa, editio nova Amsteldami (Amsterdam), Henrici Laurentii, Bibliopolae, 1635-1636 - Second and most important edition produced by Menasseh Ben Israel, in a magnificent, highly polished typography. The work features a beautiful portal-engraved frontispiece first title page in Hebrew, followed by a second title page in Latin; the third, fourth and fifth title pages are also portal-engraved and in Hebrew, corrected in pen to read "1636". Fine period binding in full vellum with cold-stamped decoration on the boards, 5-ribbed spine with red morocco title-piece, to note a small crack to the second jaw and a crack all along the first jaw, a blue stamp repeated three times on the boards and a signature dated 1912. Fairly fresh interior, some light dampening not serious, extensive annotations, some old in pen and marginalia, others mostly in colored pencil, more modern and some in pen, relatively minor. Some clumsy restorations to inner hinges. Large in-8. Provenance: Docteur E. Pivion, Paris, 19th century (blue stamp).
