Description

Spanish school; late 19th century. "Portrait of a bullfighter. Oil on canvas. Good state of preservation. Measurements: 53 x 40 cm; 65 x 52 cm (frame). Portrait of bust in which a male figure is represented that stands out for the sobriety and rotundity of the gestures. His clothing shows that this is a representation of a bullfighter, a characteristic that harmonises with the psychological impression conveyed by the piece. This work is part of the boom in regionalism in Spain in the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century, when an art with a Romantic, costumbrista heritage and a realistic and meticulous style developed, which focused on depicting subjects, themes and characters that reflected a new sense of folklore. In this context, painters sought to reflect the types and customs of their own land, which made it different and unique, thus vindicating their own roots and, above all, the traditions and ways of dressing and behaving that were threatened by the notable growth of urban areas and the imposition of new fashions brought in from outside. Art, fundamentally in its pictorial aspect, thus became, in a certain way, a vehicle of expression capable of making regional peculiarities known to the rest of the nation.
