Description

Spanish School; XVII century. "Penitent St. Jerome". Oil on canvas. Relined. Measurements: 80 x 103 cm; 92 x 114 cm (frame). An idealized landscape serves as background to the male figure located in the right zone, concentrated in his meditation. Saint Jerome shows kneeling with the crucifix in his hand, without his cardinal's tunic, usual in his iconography in the same way as the lion that can be appreciated in a second plane of the composition sketched by the artist. St. Jerome of Stridon (c. 340 - 420) is one of the four Great Fathers of the Latin Church, and was, above all, known for his translation of the Bible into Latin (called the Vulgate) and for a great number of miracles. The red cloth alludes to his cardinal's robes, he is placed in that environment alluding to his periods of penance, the stones on the ground with which he imposed hard penances on himself, the lion that accompanied him since he took the thorn out of his paw, etc. The theme of St. Jerome doing penance is already seen in works, for example, by Leonardo da Vinci (1480, Vatican Museums in Rome), Bosch (towards the end of the 15th century, Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent), Joachim Patinir (1516-1517, Museo de El Prado in Madrid), or in the work of an anonymous master made around 1520-1530 in the same museum (P08149), for example.
