Description

Italian school; 17th century. "Adoration of the Magi". Oil on canvas. Relined. Preserves period frame with faults and restorations. Measurements: 52 x 84 cm; 70 x 102 cm (frame). In this oil on canvas is represented, in a popular language, the visit of the Magi to the newborn Baby Jesus. The composition presents all the characters in the foreground, within a classical setting. The painter focuses our attention on the figures of Mary and Jesus, directly illuminated by a light that seems to be reflected on the face of the king kneeling before the Child. Behind them, shrouded in half-light, we see the secondary characters. In the present painting the characters appear, cut out against a neutral background that enhances their volumes. Stylistically, the direct influence of tenebrism dominates: the way in which a powerful light builds the volumes and cuts out the gestures, staging the moment of Christ's birth. The bodies are modeled with an energetic brushstroke, selectively illuminated, a resource that undoubtedly contributes to accentuate the devotional and emotional message contained in the work.
