Description
Gothic cross; Spain, 13th-14th centuries. Sandstone. Measurements: 77 x 83 x 30 cm. This type of crosses are known as "Crosses of term", and they used to be placed at the entrance and exit of the cities and towns, so that the traveler could pray or give thanks when returning from his way. However, their popularity since the end of the Gothic period was such that they ended up being placed on roads to mark them, as points to delimit municipal or private boundaries, to suggest a prayer to travelers, etc. The piece has great similarities with the Cruz de Termino that is part of the Albacete City Hall collection (DE00282), although in this case it is larger. In both cases the ends are decorated with fleurons of leaves. The angles have flamboyant tracery.
