Description

Flemish school; first half of the 17th century. "The Surrender of Babylon". Oil on oak panel. Cradled. It has French varnish, faults and restorations on the pictorial surface. Measurements: 39 x 58 cm; 57 x 76 cm (frame). Carolus Magnus or Charlemagne (-Aachen, 814 AD) is the Latin name by which the Frankish king became known, when he became the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne dominated most of central and western Europe and is considered the most influential European ruler of the Middle Ages. The scene depicts the moment of the conquest of Babylon. The figures that compose the scene have been conceived following the aesthetics of classicism, with a very marked humanist perspective. The harmony typical of classicism can be appreciated in the attitudes of the characters that make up the scene. This harmony is also reflected in the palette chosen by the painter. During the 17th century there were many painters who continued the style of the Flemish primitives, but others were so open to Renaissance influences that they even stopped painting on panel. In fact, in this work we can appreciate that trend of the 17th century, since, despite preserving the detail and verism of the Flemish school, the author opts for a tenebrist lighting and a classical spatial conception, typical of the Italian school. It has French varnish, faults and restorations on the pictorial surface.
