Description

Spanish school of the 16th century. "Christ crucified". Carved wood. With remains of gilding in the purity cloth. Ebonized wood cross with silver details at the ends of the arms. It presents faults in the carving. Measurements: 35 x 35 x 5 cm (Christ); 66 x 46 x 9 cm (cross). Wooden sculpture of a crucified Christ. The devotional effigy denotes quality in the carving and interest in capturing the beauty of the human body. In spite of being an anatomy in which the imprint of the pathos is impressed by the stigmata, the carver (ascribed to the Renaissance tradition) turns the limbs with skill and gives the whole a noble and harmonious bearing. The tilted head is already resting from suffering. The closed eyelids and the wiry face, framed by a beard worked tuft by tuft, give a veristic countenance. It is a Christ with three nails, covered by a cloth of purity that is stirred by an invisible wind, folding in bold draperies. The extended index finger alludes to the dual nature of Jesus, human and divine.
