"Virgin and Child with Saint John…
Description

Flemish school of the late 16th century. "Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist". Oil on copper. Frame in tortoiseshell, embossed silver and bone from the 17th century. It presents restorations. Measurements: 22 x 17 cm; 36 x 31 cm (frame). In this copper we see a devotional work of great beauty and emotion, classical in its conception although enriched by a warm and contrasted illumination, typical of the Flemish school. It presents us with a settled and balanced composition, clearly classical, based on a pyramidal scheme whose apex is Mary's head, framed by two pink curtains. The infant Jesus sleeps peacefully while being watched by his mother. Saint John with his rod and phylactery asks for silence. The figures stand out against a neutral, dark background that emphasises their physical presence, their corporeality.
