[SCIENCES NATURELLES] - LÉVEILLÉ (J. H.) - Iconographie des champignons de Paulet. Paris, Chez J. B. Baillière, 1855; in-folio, VIII-135 pp. + 217 plates, 20th-century full red morocco binding, 5-rib spine, gilt edges, fillets on boards. Complete with 204 detailed plates before the table of contents (thus 217 with plates bis and ter). Engravings by the best engravers after drawings by Fossier. Ex-libris R. Lohner on the binding. A fine uncut copy of this reprint of the plates from Jean Jacques Paulet's Traité des Champignons (1793-1835), accompanied by an unpublished text by Léveillé. Along with Bulliard's work, this is the finest French iconography on mushrooms. "Alongside these beautiful icons, of such accuracy that systematists still consult them fruitfully, a brief mention will suffice for those by Paulet (1740-1826), supplemented by a text by Léveillé...". (Davy de Virville , p.221). Paulet and Léveillé were both famous French mycologists. "The illustrious French mycologist Léveillé (1796-1870) published a large and important paper in 1837 in which he divided fungi into two major groups - basidiospores (Basidiomycetes) and thecaspores (Ascomycetes) according to the character of the spore-bearing apparatus. "(Reed, A Short History of the Plant Sciences, p.269). The beautifully hand-colored plates were drawn by Fossier, Halm, de Lussigny, Hoüel Paulet and Rouieu, and engraved by Dubois, Phelippeaux, Poisson and others.
