Female figure of the Nago (Anago). Benin / Nigeria. H 57.5cm. Standing on a round base, holding a spherical object in her left hand and a staff in her right hand, black-brown partly encrusted sacrificial patina. The figure of Nago being assessed here reveals a mixture of styles: The head, for example, shows clear Yoruba characteristics, as is the case with most figures, while the slender, elegantly curved body has little in common with the corpulent conception of Yoruba artworks - a clear criterion of Nago sculptures, which are so rarely encountered. It can therefore be considered a stroke of luck to find a characteristic Nago figure that is also characterized by balanced proportions and a gracefully curved line. It can therefore also be regarded as a successful example of African art. Intact. Provenance: Ex American private collection; ex Zemanek-Münster, Auction 98/II, Würzburg March 26, 2022, lot 199.

BENIN - NAGO people Important wooden voodoo stake statue, covered with a beautiful patina of use, sacrificial crust, two small children (twins cult). Iron planted on the top of the skull implicates the god Gou - divinity of war, forging and iron. She still has the iron stake to avoid contact with the ground and maintain her ritual power. Height: 102 cm (Base) Lots will be available for collection by appointment from July 2, 2024 in Paris XVe (Metro: Sevres-Lecourbe, or Pasteur).
