Signed on the base. A CITES certificate will be provided. (Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947) was born in Dorohoi, Romania. In 1909, he left for Italy, where he studied with Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912, he moved to Paris to perfect his art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the guidance of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher. Chiparus is best known for his chryselephantine sculptures in bronze and ivory, depicting exotic dancers mounted on pedestals in ribboned onyx or portor marble. Exhibiting at the Salon in 1914, Chiparus received an honorable medal. After the war, he opened his own studio and exhibited regularly at the salons. Most of his works were produced between 1914 and 1933. In the 1920s, Demetre Chiparus drew inspiration for his sculptures from excavations in Egypt, notably the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb. His work was also inspired by Russian ballets and French theater.)
