Description

A rare wall-mounted cartel with an engraved brass and tortoiseshell "Boulle" marquetry and a rich hunting décor in chased and gilded bronze with a crowned C; the dial with twenty-five enamelled plates signed "Lemazurier à Paris" indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals; the hunting-themed décor is symbolized by a veneur sounding a horn, dogs attacking a stag, a hunter with a stake and trophies.The lock is also signed "lemazurier à Paris". Louis XV period. H : 146 cm - L : 46-25 cm (Minor chips). An identical cartel, said to have been made for the Château de Chantilly by order of the Duc de Condé, belonged to the Fremensdor collection. Fremensdor collection (see Tardy, La pendule française, Ier Partie : De l'Horloge Gothique à la Pendule Louis XV, Paris, 1967, p.159); the author indicates that King Louis XV had one made for Versailles.
