Attributed to Joseph PAELINCK (1781-1839) The beautiful Anthia walking at the head of her companions at the Temple of Diana in Ephesus, ca. 1820 Canvas (Old restorations.) Height 83 cm; Width: 111 cm Joseph Paelinck's composition illustrates an episode from the Ephesiacs, in which Abrocome meets Anthia during a procession to the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Dressed in a red cloak, the hero irritates Eros with his indifference towards Anthia. In revenge, the god awakens in him a consuming passion for the young woman and condemns them to terrible trials. With its chaste, gallant theme, harmonious composition and precise brushwork, this painting is an excellent example of neo-classical art. There are two other versions of this composition. The first is in the Ghent Museum (canvas 230 x 300 cm), and was acquired by the museum when it was exhibited at the 1820 Salon; the second went on sale in Genoa (Boetto) on 30.05.2011, no. 83 (canvas 120 x 150 cm).
