British school, late 19th century Views of Iceland: the sulfur mountains at Kousavik (Húsavík, Norðurþing, Norðurland eystra) Gouaches on paper, one pair 18.2 x 62.2 cm. 17.1 x 62.2 cm One monogrammed and dated: AC 1887 On the back, handwritten annotations, dating from the late 19th century: Iceland / View from the sulphur mountains / looking over an extinct crater full of cold / water to Kousavik the Sea / The Sulphur is found under the hot mud in the smoking valley below. Provenance : - Douglas Barrett, London, - Edric van Vredenburgh, Paris An interesting example of a plein-air landscape in the wilds of Iceland, of which few equivalents are known from this period.
