17th-century Roman school, entourage of Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) Study of two male figures, probably Roman soldiers casting lots for Christ's garment Black stone and white chalk on paper, ironed with a stylus 315 x 450 mm. Watermark: circular, lettered, grape motif in center On the sheet: annotation in pen, lower right, probably 18th century: Anibale Carracci On the mounting board: annotation in pen, lower left, 19th century: Annibale Carracci, of Bologna, 1560 + 1609 (Large vertical fold, various folds, pitting, tiny tear at upper right corner) Provenance: Corsican private collection for several generations.
