With some woodcut vignettes a. initials. Cont. vellum binding in modern cardboard slipcase (somewhat stronger scuffed, rubbed a. stained, with small cover defects). - Rare, only 3 copies listed by Worldcat - Currently for us not verifiable in international trade. - Somewhat browned due to paper, 1st page illegible stamped, the first 50 pp. with weakening dampstain, only isolated with pale brown spots. Altogether very well preserved.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Valkyrie Early 20th cent, signed Kirchner, foundry mark K in horseshoe, bronze with nuanced dark brown patina, depicting a Valkyrie with winged helmet, her long curly hair spilling out from underneath, armed with spear and shield and clad in a flowing dress with chain mail, she stands with a serious, almost solemn gaze and lowered head on a naturalistic rock plinth, it is probably an early work by Kirchner, before he took the path to Impressionism and later to Expressionism, in good condition for its age, h 40 cm. Artist info: important German painter, graphic artist, sculptor. Painter, graphic artist, sculptor and designer (1880 Aschaffenburg to 1938 Frauenkirch near Davos), childhood in Chemnitz, initially studied architecture at the Technische Hochschule (TH) in Dresden 1901-05, in between at the TH Munich and art student at the Debschitz School in Munich, 1905 together with Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel founded the artist group "Brücke" in Dresden, 1907-11 summer stays of the group in Goppel, Fehmarn and the Moritzburg Ponds, 1911 moved to Berlin, 1912 together with Max Pechstein unsuccessfully founded the painting school "MUIM (Modern Instruction in Painting)", 1913 Brücke fell out as a result of Kirchner's Brücke Chronicle, increasing popularity due to the exhibitions of works organised by the Jenaer Kunstverein from 1914, 1917 moved to Switzerland, 1931 member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, 1933-45 defamed as "degenerate" in Germany, source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer and Internet.
