The object of the journey was "primarily the examination, for the Siamese Government, of a supposed very rich deposit of gems (rubies and sapphires), lately discovered on the left bank of the Mekong, opposite Chien Kong" (Preface, p. v). A French carved boxwood panel showing the Lamentation of Christ, late 16th century Boxwood with fine age patina. Rectangular panel, the upper edge terminating in a pointed arch. Finely carved portrayal of Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus in her lap. John mourning to his right, Mary Magdalene kneeling in the front. The reverse with fine shrinkage cracks, traces of adhesive tape. On an older display rack covered with red velvet. Dimensions 18.5 x 9.5 cm. Condition: II
