Large volume in-8 of [4] ff. including title decorated with a large and beautiful woodcut frame, 1165-[1] pp. Brown marbled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt title (17th c. binding). Spellbinding, gnawing and missing leather in places. Restoration to verso of title, with small loss to upper corner. Ninth edition of the Essais, the first published in the 17th century, beginning with a preface by Mlle de Gournay, Montaigne's "daughter-in-law". Exact page-by-page reprint of the 1598 edition (which was the rare second edition, with a new preface by Mlle de Gournay, of the famous posthumous edition of 1595, based on Montaigne's manuscripts and setting the definitive text of the Essais).
