Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kupferstichkabinett SM 53.139_WZ). - Thomas Bury was a pupil of the well-known architect and architectural theorist Augustus Pugin. He later worked with his son, among others, on the interior design of the House of Parliament. However, Bury is particularly well known for his views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which first appeared in 1831 as six hand-colored aquatints under the title "Six Coloured Views of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, with a plate of the coaches, machines, etc.". The work enjoyed great popularity, which is why further editions, extensions and editions in foreign languages were published within a few years. - Bury's professional interests are clearly evident in the elaborate architectural elements of the depictions, which were finally transferred to the aquatint medium by Henry Pyall and S.G. Hughes. - Partially minimally browned in the mat opening, a few plates with occasional pale brown stains. Overall in very good condition. Richly nuanced depictions in luminous coloring. 13 hand colored aquatint plates. The plates each mounted in dots under mat and firmly bound in leather album with staggered fillets, gilt title on cover and spine, marbled paper endpapers (the cover discolored at one side, slightly rubbed). - The plates show views of early railway constructions in Great Britain, railway stations, tunnels and ravines, etc. - plates 1-7 each dated in print with "Feby. 1831", all further plates each with year. The drawings, made on delicate China paper, show birds (10 pictures), butterflies (5) and plants (1). They are each framed in passe-partouts created from two book pages. The delicate compositions are strongly reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints from the Meiji period and are thus in the tradition of Japonism, which emerged in Western art in the late 19th century. - According to the note on the title page, "painted and copied for the benefit and pleasure of a true friend of free nature and the mountains". - Very occasional barely noticeable foxing.
