Aristide MAILLOL (Banyuls-sur-mer 1861 – 1944)

Nude with drape Brown ink on paper 26.5 x 19 cm Monogrammed lower right AM A certificate of authenticity issued by Olivier Lorquin on December 10, 2021 will be given to the buyer. The image of the woman is omnipresent in Aristide Maillol's work. Fascinated by her body and beauty, the artist placed her at the heart of his artistic preoccupations. After painting and drawing her on several occasions, it was in sculpture that he succeeded in paying her the most beautiful of tributes. The year 1900 was a turning point in Maillol's work, as he invented a veritable repertoire of forms, foreshadowing his future work. His first wooden sculptures, then his clay and clay models, evoke archaic Greek statuary. True to his passion for the female model, Maillol chose here to depict a young woman in the nude. Her harmonious, sensual forms recall the perfect proportions of statuary.
