Two Roman bronze chariot body suspensions with eagle and swan heads, 2nd - 3rd century A.D. Two identical suspensions for a wagon body to cushion shocks made of bronze with figural depictions in fine quality. Octagonal, slightly conical spout with a thick wall and prominent rim reinforcements at the top and bottom. The three facets of the front with floral décor of incised and punched decoration. On each side two swan necks with bent back head. Beak, eyes and plumage finely and skilfully chiselled. On the spout an eagle's head with equally finely worked plumage, eyes and beak. Very beautiful green patina with some reddish spots. Height 12.5 cm, width on the front approx. 17.5 cm. Exceptionally beautiful pair of Roman wagon suspensions with about perfect surface in excellent condition. Provenance: From an Austrian private collection, acquired in the 1970s in the Austrian art trade. Condition: I -
