Lumi dance stick, Southern Torricelli stylistic area Papua New Guinea Carved black palm wood Late 19th century - early 19th century Height: 79.5cm Provenance: - Paris. Cornette de Saint Cyr sale. 28.10.2002. Lot n°182 - Yves Créhalet Collection. - Olivier Caumont Collection This dancing stick features two stylized figures perched on top of each other on both sides. The skilful, graphic composition of juxtaposed geometrical forms lends the piece a remarkable rhythm, in keeping with its intended use. Beautiful brown patina, with white pigment highlights in the hollows of the ribs and engravings, intensifying the play of patterns and planes.
