Description

Senoufo pendant, Korhogo, Ivory Coast Late 19th - early 20th century Bronze A pair of bronze Senoufo pendants featuring two figures with classic Senoufo characteristics, each surmounting a triangular flared plate decorated with geometric motifs. The rigor of the angular, linear base over which the figures stand is skilfully contrasted with the soft curves of their rounded arms, magnifying their gestures. Blandin explains that these triangular-base figurines, characteristic of the Senufo of Korhogo, represent bush genies. To protect themselves, women (and sometimes men) wear a figurine of this type around the neck or on the arm, sewn onto a leather support (André Blandin, Bronzes et autres alliages, Afrique de l'Ouest, 1988, p. 86).
