Spatula with handle Goodenough Island. Iles d'Entrecasteaux. Ebony wood Height: 343mm 19th century. Provenance: Label on the blade with inscription L (or O) WDT7 Kirby Kallas-Lewis Collection.Seattle.Washington (2001) Harry Beran Collection. London HB884 Collection John & Marcia Friede.Rye. New York USA The elaborate workmanship of the wavy engraved decoration accentuates the presence of the schematized figure animating the top of this spatula. Its white pigments magnify the finesse of the engraved, undulating work, accentuating the delicate rhythm of the forms, all softness and voluptuousness marked by a scroll decoration. A rare form of spatula, produced before the first Western contacts. For two similar models, see Newton (1975) n°6 and Beran (1988) n°63 in the form of a central openwork ring with an inner projection.
