Description

Russian Icon of the XVII century. "The Dormition of the Virgin". Painting on wood. Lacks in the wood and polychrome. Marks of wear due to the passage of time. Measurements: 30,5 x 25 cm. The Russian icon of the XVIII century presents the sleeping of the Virgin Mary and her assumption to heaven by Jesus Christ. The Virgin, who has fallen asleep, is surrounded by the suffering apostles. Beyond the apostles, there are also the holy bishops. Dark and somber tones prevail in the icon. But the mantle on which the Virgin stands is luminous and this communicates to us that she accepts with serenity and joy her death, Jesus Christ, who stands above her and holds in his hands a child in a snow-white dress. This child represents the immaculate soul of the Virgin Mary, who concluded her earthly life without any illness or pain. That is why this final moment is called "dormition" or "transit" of the Virgin Mary. And so, since the 6th century, the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary began to be celebrated in the East: a way of expressing that it was a transit more similar to sleep than to death. She left this earth - as some saints affirm - in a transport of love. Faults in the wood and polychrome. Marks of wear due to the passage of time.
