Chinese writing desk from the first half of the 19th century. In Canton black lacquered wood, gilded and silver plated. Measurements: 142,5 x 60 x 69 cm. Furniture made up of a cupboard-like upper body and a desk with a cloth-covered top which folds out to allow writing. The wood lacquered in Cantonese black has been decorated on all its fronts with scenes resolved with fine marquetry reproducing interior court environments and also Chinese architecture, following models of traditional painting. They alternate with inlaid vegetal elements. The top is crowned with a central medallion also decorated with a domestic scene from ancient China. The desk is supported on cabriole legs topped with ball-and-claw feet. This type of furniture was highly valued in 19th-century Europe thanks to the influence that the importation of Chinese plates had on French cabinetmaking at the time.
