Imitator of the Master of the Madonna of Zabraslav (Royal Hall). Bohemia, 1762. H 41 cm, W 26 cm (original panel without later frame). Tempera on beechwood, gold ground engraved with foliate tendrils, gold details in clothing, hallmarks. Latin titulus "Maria in aula regia" in the lower part of the picture. Verso Latin inscription with date: "Atracta ad Originale, Thaumam... Aula Regia, [...] gentis Ord. Cisterciensis, Anno 1762. die 26 Novem". With wax seal of the Jesuits of the diocese of Prague, certifying the painting as a relic of contact. Remains of a written document. Dated! Certified as a touch relic with the wax seal of the Jesuits! Excellent copy of the Madonna of Zabraslav (1350-1360), which is now in the National Gallery in Prague. This is considered one of the most important Madonna paintings from the time of Charles IV and is a key work in many respects. As one of the most famous images of the Virgin Mary in Bohemia, it was originally located in the church of the Cistercian monastery in Zbraslav, where the Bohemian kings from the Premyslid dynasty were buried. Some believe that Charles IV commissioned the painting himself. The iconographic and formal motifs of the Madonnas of Most and Veverí are fused here into a new monumental composition, which recurs in the later variants of the painting. The ring on the Madonna's finger refers to the mystical betrothal of Christ and Mary, which symbolizes the Christian church. This allegorical identification of Mary with the Church is characteristic of the Cistercian context and goes back to the sermons of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. The Zbraslav Madonna was highly venerated and there are numerous copies, mainly from the Baroque period. The Zbraslav Madonna was consecrated as the 43rd chapel on the Sacred Way from Prague to Mladá Boleslav, which was built by the Jesuits between 1674 and 1690. Very well preserved. Slight wear to the gold, splintered wood in the titulus. Provenance: Ex private collection H.L., Rhineland, since before 2000.
