CREIL, early 19th century. Red-figured terra-cotta amphorae with antique decoration. H. 36 cm. (accidents and old restorations). Note: This pair of red-figured amphoras is taken from Sir William HAMILTON's second collection of vases, which was shipwrecked on its way from Naples to England in the winter of 1798-1799. Manufacture de Creil (recessed mark under the base), early 19th century, under the artistic direction of Jacques BAGNALL (1762-1825), who drew inspiration from the famous neo-classical productions of his compatriot Josiah WEDGWOOD.
