Description

Valckenborch, Frederik van und Werkstatt/and Studio Antwerpen 1566 - Nürnberg 1623 100 x 185 cm Venetian Carnival at Night. Oil/canvas, relined. The motif can be found in various versions in Valckenborch's oeuvre. The closest to our painting is a larger version, which was last offered in 2000 by Antichità Pietro Scarpa, Venice. Pietro Scarpa assumes that the nocturnal carnival scene depicts the festive entry of the Dogaressa Morosina Morosini Grimani, the wife of Doge Marino Grimani (cf. Alexander Wied, Frederik und Gillis van Valckenborch. Zwei Italo-Flamen im deutschen Exil, Wien 2016, p. 76, no. F25). A similar, but laterally reversed and smaller version can be found at Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no. 5763). The "Venetian" architecture is fantasy; the carnival as such is probably based on memories (and sketches?) from Valckenborch's stay in Venice.
