Pieter Nason is thought to have been a pupil of Nicolas Eliasz. Pickenoy and Jan van Ravensteyn an became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1639. The subjects of his paintings were invariably aristocratic patrons in elaborate dress; in this portrait, the sitter's status is evidenced by his embroidered white collar and cuffs.
