Oil/cradled panel, at the lower marin inscribed "IN HOC APPARVIT CHARITAS DEI IN NOBIS, QUONIAM FILIUM SVVUM VNIGENITVM MISIT IN MVUNDUM, VT VIVAMVS PER EVUM" (after Joh. 3, 16). The lost original version of this theme by Massys has survived in numerous workshop versions and variants, the two highest quality of which are now kept in the Musée Royaux in Brussels (inv. no. 4705) and the Royal Museum in Antwerp (inv. no. 565).
