MUSEAL AND LARGE PARTIAL GILT SILVER TANKARD WITH SCENES OF THE NATIVITY Halle an der Saale, August Hosse, early 18th century H. 22 cm Silver, gold-plated. Openwork mantle, the lid and stand with openwork applications in the form of acanthus leaves and floating putti with tendrils. Cast and moulded handle with a female herm. The openwork mantle depicts the Adoration of the Magi to the right of the handle and the Adoration of the Shepherds to the left. Hallmark of Halle with the date letter "S", maker's mark of August Hosse (1657-1732). Ca. 1637gr. Older restoration to the rim of the lid. Min. dented. Private collection, Bavaria, acquired before 2000 from Udo Urban Antiquitäten Kampen/Sylt. August Hosse was entered in the register of citizens in Halle in 1684. Rosenberg, vol. II, no. 2305, 2324. August Hosse was one of the most famous Baroque silversmiths from Halle. He worked for clients all over Europe. His magnificent tankards are famous, mostly with openwork mantles, as in the case of our piece, which mainly depict Biblical and mythological scenes.
