Louis ABEL (Liancourt c. 1760 - Paris ?, 1801) Portrait of a young harpist, circa 1790. Watercolor and gouache, tondo. Signed lower right: "Abel f". Circled in gilded brass, a translucent blond horn box tops the lid. Miniature diameter: 7.6 cm. Box: Height: 2.5 cm. Diameter: 9 cm. A miniature painter active in Paris at the end of the 18th century until 1801, Louis Abel was a very good pupil of Jean-Urbain Guérin (1761-1836). Close to musical and theatrical circles, he exhibited three miniatures at the Salon of 1800, including one depicting the actor Hugot l'Ainé, now in the Louvre (Musée du Louvre, Cabinet des Arts graphiques, inv. RF30645), executed in a style similar to our own: landscapes, light-colored flesh and relaxed poses.
