A FINE LOUIS XVI ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY LONG CASE CLOCK late 18th century, in the manner of David Roentgen H. 255 cm Unusual, two-part mahogany case with fine brass mounts and a carved giltwood figure of Minerva as finial. The glazed case flanked and divided by fluted pilasters, the brass front with gilt bronze putto applications. Large, domed enamel dial with double 12-hour division in red and black with Roman numerals and Arabic minutes, subsidiary dials for small seconds, day, date and month in German and French. Signed Pierre Schmitt A MAYENCE. Large movement with carillon, 8-day running time, half-hour striking on bell and scissors escapement. Rest. Movement not tested. With pendulum and weights. According to sources from 1784, Pierre Schmitt was a court clockmaker from Mainz who also worked on clock movements for David Roentgen's workshop.
