A Louis XVI ormolu-mounted amaranth, tulipwood and fruitwood marquetry commode Pierre-Harry Mewesen, Paris, late 18th century 83.5 x 91 x 49 cm The moulded rectangular pink and grey veined marble top above a pair of drawers, inlaid sans travers with a fan motif, flanked by cast festoons and veneered à quatres faces, on cabriole legs ending in acanthus cast sabots, stamped tiwce PIERRE-HARRY MEWESEN and JME. Rest. Minor losses to the veneers Pierre-Henry Mewesen, maître in 1766. Pierre-Harry Mewesen, of Swedish origin, became a master in 1766 and set up shop on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, at "la main d'or", where he remained for around twenty years, until the revolution. A cabinetmaker of great talent, he left a few pieces of Louis XV furniture, but above all works in the Transition and Louis XVI styles, made with taste and a great deal of imagination.
