A TALL BURMESE LACQUERED WOOD DRUM, 19TH CENTURY Burma/ Myanmar, Mandalay period. Standing on a tall foot supported on a flat circular base, carved with ridges and lacquered black, with a red and green band at the center, the drum with leather straps. Condition: Good condition with wear and traces of use, nicks, few natural age cracks, and small chips. Provenance: Old Belgian private collection. A copy of a signed authentication certificate from Dech Gallery, Bangkok, Thailand, dated 24 March 2014, no. DG032414-2, accompanies this lot. Dimensions: Height 212 cm

Standing with his arms resting at his stomach, cradling an offering bowl, wearing a long robe draping over his right shoulder, neatly embellished with wavy hems. The face with a serene expression with heavy lidded brows, slender lips forming a calm smile, and pendulous lobes. The figure is covered in black lacquer with rich gilding. Mounted on a wood base. Standing on a double lotus base with feet slightly apart, the right hand raised in Abhaya mudra and the right carrying an alms bowl, wearing a long dhoti secured with a simple belt and a broad central pleat at the front, extensive traces of lacquer and gilding remaining overall. Provenance: German private collection. Condition: Good condition with old wear, natural age cracks, flaking and touch-ups to the lacquer, minute nicks, and scratches. Consisting of two lacquered wooden covers and twelve double-sided folios with black, red and gold lacquer. Consisting of passages from the Buddhist canon Tipitaka. Provenance: From a private collection in Zagreb, Croatia. Condition: Good condition with wear. Flaking to lacquer, minor creases, some cracks, and folds. Chips to wood covers. Dimensions: Size 60.7 x 14 cm Kammavaca manuscripts, as the present one, are usually highly ornamental, with thickly applied lacquer and gilded decorations on both covers and leaves, and Pali text written in ornate Burmese characters - 'tamarind-seed' script. They are often commissioned by lay patrons as gifts to monasteries.
