A LARGE INLAID GILT-LACQUER WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, BURMA, 19TH CENTURY

A LARGE INLAID GILT-LACQUER WOOD FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, BURMA, 19TH CENTURY Myanmar. Seated in dhyanasana on a pedestal, his right hand lowered in bhumisparsha mudra, the left held in dhyana mudra above his lap, dressed in tight-fitting robes finely carved with geometric designs and elaborately decorated with multicolored glass inlays. The serene face with heavy-lidded eyes, gracefully arched brows, and slender lips forming a benevolent smile, flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in tight spikes, the ushnisha topped by a tall, separately carved ketumala. Provenance: French private collection. Private collection of Régis Gonnard, acquired from the above. Condition: Good condition with typical wear, minor flaking to the lacquer, very minor losses to inlays, small nicks, chips, and age cracks.
