A THAI STUCCO HEAD OF BUDDHA, HARIPUNJAYA KINGDOM, 11TH-13TH CENTURY Expert’s note: The prominently delineated features are characteristic of the Haripunjaya style and recall the Dvaravati school of sculpture. The head with an expression of intense concentration, the brow ridged and furrowed, half-closed eyes, broad nose, fleshy outlined lips which are underlined by a fine mustache, all flanked by elongated earlobes, the hair arranged in bristling curls surmounted by an ushnisha. Note the unusually expressive molding and carving work overall. Provenance: From a private estate in Austria. Condition: Extensive wear, obvious losses, and firing irregularities. Nicks, scratches, chips, signs of weathering and erosion, all as expected. Weight: 2,914 g (excl. stand), 3,914 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 21.5 cm, 35 cm (incl. stand) With a modern wood stand. (2) The high-relief terracotta heads of the ancient kingdom of Haripunjaya belong to images of the standing Buddha that were placed in niches on the exterior faces of monuments such as sixty-niche pyramids and octagonal stupa-shrines. Both bodies and heads were made in molds. The heads tend to be characterized by sprightly, undulant, and sharply delineated features.
