A SMALL SANDSTONE HEAD OF A MALE DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAPHUON STYLE Khmer Empire, 11th century. Finely carved with a cleft chin and downcast eyes beneath gently arched brows. The jatamukuta in fine braids pulled up into a topknot secured by a raised ring, the top of the hair with a blossom shaped cover. Provenance: The private collection of John Jessen Hansen, Denmark, acquired in 2000. A copy of an old certificate of expertise from Cheng’s Collection, signed and dated 17 February 2000, confirming the dating, accompanies this present lot. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, losses, small chips, nicks, scratches, and few touchups. Weight: 1,876 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 20.8 cm (incl. stand) and 13.5 cm (excl. stand) This superbly detailed sculptural head was created during the Baphuon period. The enigmatic facial expression shows a faint smile, and the hair is formed by slender tresses braided backwards, rising into a chignon. Mounted on a recent metal stand. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related sandstone figure of a male deity, probably Shiva, dated mid-11th century, 116.2 cm tall, formerly in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 1987.414, deaccessioned in 2023.
