A copy of a signed expertise and appraisal by Bernard Le Gall, Galerie Arts et Civilisations, Quimper, France, dated 10 January 2013, confirming the dating above, and stating the value of the present lot as EUR 12,500 or approx. EUR 15,000 (adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Minor wear, some losses, signs of weathering and erosion, few nicks, tiny chips, and natural imperfections. (2) Banteay Srei is a 10th century temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and Parvati. It is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today. The buildings themselves are miniature in scale, unusually so, when measured by the standards of Angkorian construction. These factors have made the temple extremely popular with tourists, and have led to it being widely praised as the jewel of Khmer art. Literature comparison: Compare a related reddish sandstone antefix with a kneeling guardian, Angkor period, third quarter of the 10th century, 63.5 cm tall, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2003.142. Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Sotheby’s New York, 24 March 2011, lot 33 Price: USD 10,000 or approx. EUR 13,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: Apsaras Red sandstone Khmer, Angkor Wat style Expert remark: Compare the closely related form with similar modelling and lobed arch. Note the smaller size (29.9 cm).
