A CIZHOU RUSSET-SPLASHED BLACK-GLAZED PILLOW, SONG DYNASTY China, 11th-12th century. Massively potted in elegant ruyi form, the concave top with a thick black glaze showing an abstract floral design painted in bold russet splashes, and thick drippings from the glaze just above the unglazed base. Provenance: From a Swiss private collection. Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and firing irregularities including firing cracks and glaze recesses, the base with minor scratches. Finely modeled with its head resting upon the front paws and painted with bold brown stripes over a biscuit glaze covering the body, with a broad head, short ears, wide snout, and mouth slightly ajar, the limbs tucked below the body, the tail wrapped around the launches.
