A GREEN-GLAZED POTTERY MODEL OF A GRANARY, HAN DYNASTY

A GREEN-GLAZED POTTERY MODEL OF A GRANARY, HAN DYNASTY Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 16 February 2024, based on sample number C124b43, sets the firing date of two samples taken between 1400 and 2200 years ago. A copy of the report, issued by Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot. China, 206 BC to 220 AD. Constructed as two stories and raised about the ground on four feet, the granary with an overhanging gable roof, symmetrically placed openings and a projecting balcony with molded railings and a central lattice-work panel. The front feet are in the shape of bears positioned as guardians at each corner of the granary. Covered overall in a dark green glaze, which has partially oxidized, giving it an iridescent gleam. Provenance: Hungarian private collection. Condition: Very good condition overall, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, few losses, tiny chips, encrustations, and structural cracks. Drilled holes from sample-taking. Repairs and touchups as generally expected from Han dynasty excavations. Weight: 11.3 kg Dimensions: Height 46.7 cm, Length 41 cm This green-glazed model storehouse for grain served as burial ware or ‘mingqi'. The practice of using lead-glazed burial wares had already started during the Han dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE) and it continued into the Ming period (1368-1644). The custom of burying objects with the deceased stems from the belief in life after death. Burial models attest to the prevalence of multistoried buildings in early imperial China. This two-story structure, simply constructed of clay slabs, has a tile roof and an openwork balcony supported by brackets. Such realistic details are modified by imaginative “squatting-bear” feet. This model may depict a granary, or it may have been assembled with other structures to form a residential compound. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related green glazed model of a watchtower, Han dynasty, in the collection of the Shanghai Museum. Compare a closely related green glazed model of a granary, Early-mid Eastern Han, in the collection of the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore, accession number 1992-01287.
