† A YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE ‘SUN GOD’ PENDANT, HONGSHAN CULTURE China, Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. In the form of a seated humanoid figure with double horns, the hands resting on the knees, the face detailed with ovoid eyes and upwards pointed ears, the body with pierced sections between the arms and legs, as well as a horizontally drilled suspension hole behind the head. The semi-translucent stone of a yellow tone with areas of russet skin, veins, and few dark gray inclusions. Provenance: U.S. collection. The stand with an inscribed label. The authentication of this piece was conducted by Senior Fellow Gu Fang of the Institute of Archeology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) on 17 February 2023, number 46490-16841, described as ‘Jade sun god’, dated to the Hongshan culture (4700-2500 BC), signed by Gu Fang, and notarized by Notary Noreen J. Lowery, New York. Gu Fang, born 1962 in Beijing, graduated from the Department of Archeology of the prestigious Beijing University in 1986. He later studied at the CASS where he is now working as a Senior Fellow specializing in Archeological excavations and research on Chinese Jades. Gu Fang authored several books on Chinese jades including 15 volumes on ‘The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China’, one of the largest collections of Chinese jades to date. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few minuscule nicks, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time. Fine, unctuous patina. External Expert Authentication: A copy of the authentication report from Senior Fellow Gu Fang of the Institute of Archeology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) accompanies this lot and will be transmitted to the winning bidder. Weight: 52.9 g Dimensions: Height 7.2 cm Mounted on a modern metal stand. (2) The Hongshan culture, from which this jade pendant comes, remained unknown until the 1980s. Centered in northeastern China, it is known for large ceremonial structures built with rocks, graves lined with stone slabs, and distinctively shaped jades that were often the sole goods found in tombs.
