A RARE NEOLITHIC CARNELIAN ‘MASK’ BEAD, LIANGZHU CULTURE China, Liangzhu Culture, c. 3300-2200 BC. Of triangular section with long rounded sides, the gently curved front elaborately incised with a mask with large round eyes within slightly raised reserves joined by a short bridge above a raised nose, the reverse carved with a scrolling motif, drilled with a narrow groove on either end. The translucent stone of mottled blood-orange hue with inclusions of beige and veins of russet. Provenance: From a private collection in Germany. Condition: Good condition with extensive old wear and expected natural imperfections. The stone with minor losses, natural cracks and veining, as well as blunt cuts to the edges.
