A PAIR OF ELEGANT HONGMU "BLACKWOOD" SIDE CHAIRS, 1900s

A PAIR OF ELEGANT HONGMU "BLACKWOOD" SIDE CHAIRS, 1900s China, late 19th to early 20th century. With a well-carved curving top rail supported on a broad S-shaped splat with geometric designs, and curved rear posts continuing downwards to form the rear legs. The seat frame enclosing a square board seat above an apron carved with an archaistic scrolling design. The legs joined by stretchers on the sides and a footrest on the front. Provenance: Masterpiece Arts House, Singapore. German private collection, acquired from the above on 29 June 1978. A copy of the original invoice accompanies this lot. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, manufacturing irregularities, and some joins slightly loose. The wood has a superb grain and is covered in a fine varnish with a warm hue.
