Fereydoon Mambeygi (Iran, 1940-2017)Senza Titolo, 1991Mixed media su tela 97 x 120 cm

Mambeygi was an active exponent of the so-called Hurufiyya Movement, an important aesthetic movement that developed in the second half of the 20th century. The artists who were part of the movement that uses Arabic or Persian letters in their works, but with a modern twist. In his practice, Mambeygi expanded his interest in calligraphy, including in his work also letters and writing coming from the East Asian tradition, more specifically the one from Japan. Mambeygi is mentioned in H. Keshmirshekan, An Introduction to Contemporary Iranian Art (Persian ed.), Saqi Books, 2013, pp. 308-309.In this painting, the letters are arranged in such a way as to generate abstract shapes, emphasized by black and white with touches of vivid colours and the succession of solids and voids. An influence of American Abstract Expressionism can also be recognized in his works.Signed and dated lower left. Provenance: the owner had it directly from the artist.
