Italian coins NAPLES Ferdinand II (1830-1859) Half Tornese 1854 - Nomisma missing CU (g 5.10) RRRR 4 rebated on 3 (?). The 1854 half Tornese of the second type with adult effigy and raised tuft of hair dated 1854 is extremely rare and until this specimen, now proposed, its existence was also questioned because with this date the type with mature and larger head is known; of the latter, in fact, specimens are known with the vintage 1853/1854 and a double mintage dated1854 with different effigies, beyond the date 1853 of released coins in the mint of the third type, for Magliocca appeared anachronistic, a chronological order of dates/effigies was exceeded; the author of the volume on the coinage of Naples at the time ruled out the type because the coin had never been noticed and never appeared in numismatic auctions. True, too, that the last digit of the date, i.e., the 4 and punched on an earlier number 3 of the date, thus on a specimen originally dated 1853 but of the second type. - FDC

Louis Dominique MATHET (1853-1920). Sculpture in white Carrara marble representing a female nude in a contrapposto position. It stands on a circular molded onyx base. Signed on the base L. MATHET. France. 19th century, circa 1890. Height : 87 cm A few small chips to the base. Louis MATHET began his career as an apprentice with Tarbes sculptor MENVIELLE, before joining NELLI's workshop. He left Tarbes, moved to Paris and became a pupil and assistant to Auguste RODIN, whose marbles were sometimes criticized for the few he carved himself. In fact, he called on the services of practitioners to reproduce some of his works, in response to numerous commissions. Among these practitioners was Louis MATHET, who worked in his studio between 1893 and 1910, and again between 1916 and 1918. His works included La Petite fée des eaux, La Tempête, Paolo et Francesca dans les nuages, Psyché-Pomone, Le Secret and Lady Warwick. Expert: Stéphane Pépe
