Unknown (19th), Arrival in Augsburg, around 1840, Pencil Unknown (19th century): Arrival in Augsburg Group of men welcomed by a cheering crowd, c. 1840, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Verso inscribed by another person: "Zimmermann Ankunft in Augsburg". Date: c. 1840 Description: A group of young men in hunters' or travellers' costumes are greeted with great cheers outside the town. The group poses with sweeping gestures, waving their caps and announcing their arrival by blowing their horns. The silhouette of the city, presumably Augsburg, can be recognised in the distance. It is no longer possible to determine whether this is a humorous testimony to the artist's own arrival, in which he caricaturises the enthusiasm of the people in the face of his own person, or whether it is an event of local interest.
