Set of four baroque altar candlesticks in punched Spanish silver by the goldsmith Matías Vallejo (?-1703) Madrid Corte ff. S. XVII- pp. 18th century. They present chipping as proof of having passed the relevant inspection. With cupped saucers that have been pierced, with cylindrical vase lighters, they have a balustraded stem alternating cylindrical and rounded areas. Almost under the saucer a fairly large apple knot and almost at the junction with the foot an inverted pear knot. The foot is pyramidal decorated with chiseled and embossed vegetal scrolls with a central shield of Castilla-León on its three faces and lion's claw feet. They have a wooden core in the foot. Matías Vallejo was Charles II's acting silversmith between 1695 and 1703, the date on which he died and also served as a marker at the court of Madrid. The Consistory of Toledo keeps an altar set composed of two candlesticks and a cross by Matías Vallejo, the candlesticks being very similar to these both in shapes and decoration, also emblazoned, but in this case with an engraved shield of the city of Toledo, with a double-headed eagle with an imperial crown and quartered shield of castles and lions and has the date 1702. The measurements of our candlesticks also coincide with those of Toledo. That is why we consider the punch as proof of authorship and not of faithful contrast. In the Museum of Decorative Arts of Madrid there are pieces by this silversmith: a votive lamp (inventory number CE26547) and two mancerinas (CE26365 and CE26366).
