Ferroud Successeur, 1920. - In-8, 237 x 156: portrait, (2 ff.), XVII, 218 pp, (2 ff.), 15 plates, illustrated cover. Maroquin burgundy, mosaic floral garland in purple, dark green, havana and black morocco, edged with gilt motifs, bordering the boards and running continuously to the ends of the spine, ribbed spine decorated with mosaic flowers, purple moiré silk lining, edged with a green morocco listel and gilt fillet, same silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, lined case (Esther Founès). Esteemed edition, printed in an edition of 1220 copies, illustrated with 55 compositions by Auguste LEROUX (1871-1954), of which 18 hors texte etchings by Decisy, including the frontispiece portrait of the author, and 37 woodcuts in the text by Clément, including one in color on the title, repeated on the cover. Unquestionably one of Leroux's finest illustrations. One of 100 copies on Japon or Arches vellum, here on Japon, containing two states of the hors-texts, one with remarks (no. 178). A very fine copy bound in the period by the Parisian bookbinder Esther Founès, who practiced from 1920 to 1939. Bindings of this quality from her workshop are very rare. Spine slightly faded.
